Beginning Quilting: Half-Square Triangle Patchwork Wall-Hanging with Sashiko Quilting


Learn how to make a half-square triangle quilt! The half-square triangle is one of the most basic and versatile traditional quilt blocks. There are innumerable options to the layout and you’ll soon see how this simple traditional block can be transformed into a modern masterpiece. You will be able to sew from our patterns or design your own. In addition to learning the steps to create your quilt blocks, you will learn hand-quilting techniques to finish your project with Sashiko thread.

In this class, taught by local fiber artist Chloé Derderian, students will create one 18”x18” sampler or wall hanging, and acquire useful tips and techniques taught in class to continue your quilting journey.

Skills learned in class:

  • Pattern design and layout

  • Patchwork piecing

  • Making a quilt sandwich

  • Pin basting

  • Hand-quilting with sashiko thread

  • Making bias-binding and binding your quilt

Materials needed:

  • 6 fat quarters. Please pre-wash fabric according to manufacturer’s instructions.

  • 1/2 yard batting

  • 1 pack Sashiko/Embroidery needles

  • Matching thread

  • Sashiko floss or Perle cotton

Students will receive 10% off of supplies purchased at Bolt. Please purchase supplies in advance of the class, as it is necessary to pre-wash fabric to manufacturers specifications.
