Beginning Sewing: Make a Work Apron!

This class is a chance for the absolute beginner to dive in, learn to navigate a sewing machine and come out with a useful finished product in 3 hours. We’ll create a half apron with waist ties and a double pocket, no pattern needed!  This apron is great for servers, cooks, and crafty people of all kinds.

In this class students will learn:

  • How to thread and wind a bobbin on a home sewing machine.

  • Operation of a home sewing machine.

  • Common sewing terms and tools.

  • Finishing stitches.

  • How to hem a garment.

  • Ironing tips and techniques, as half of sewing is knowing how to wield an iron.

Students will leave class with:

  • A basic understanding of the workings of a sewing machine.

  • A half apron handmade by you from start to finish.

  • A handout with step-by-step instructions so you can do it all again at home.

Supply List:

  • 2/3 yard pre-washed medium weight cotton woven fabric. Suggested fabrics: quilting cotton, canvas, twill, light-weight denim. Please pre-wash fabric according to manufacturer’s instructions.

  • 2 yards twill tape between 1” and 2” wide.

  • Matching thread.

Materials and supplies are NOT included in the price of the class. All materials are available to purchase at Bolt, either in store or online. Students will receive 10% off of supplies purchased at Bolt. Please purchase supplies in advance of the class, as it is necessary to pre-wash fabric to achieve desired fit.
