Beginning Sewing: The Tote

This class is a chance for absolute beginners (no previous sewing experience required!) to dive in, learn to navigate a sewing machine and come out with a useful finished product in 3 hours. In this class students will make the perfect lined grocery tote with an interior pocket!

In this class, you will learn:

  • How to operate a sewing machine.

  • How to sew a straight seam.

  • How to make and attach a patch pocket.

  • How to make a basic box corner.

  • How to make a double fold hem.

Materials list:  

  • 1/2 yard sturdy, non-stretch, woven fabric for the outside of the bag (such as non-stretch denim or canvas) Please pre-wash fabric according to manufacturer’s instructions.

  • 1/2 yard light, non-stretch, woven fabric for lining (quilting cotton, double gauze, etc) Please pre-wash fabric according to manufacturer’s instructions.

  • 2 yards webbing

  • Matching thread

Materials and supplies are NOT included in the price of the class. All materials are available to purchase at Bolt, either in store or online. Students will receive 10% off of supplies purchased at Bolt. Please purchase supplies in advance of the class, as it is necessary to pre-wash fabric to achieve desired fit.
