Transparency Quilt

--Melissa

So, as I mentioned, I quilted the finished top down at Modern Domestic using the Bernina 440 with its magical little stitch regulator foot. I practiced a bit on scraps and promptly realized I might be getting in over my head for a first project. I forged ahead.

There are a few things I would do differently next time and the first thing would be TO RELAX and stop trying to figure it out. Once I let my mind wander and my hands got into the rhythm of slow circles, my shoulder relaxed, I stopped muttering bad words, and my quilting improved dramatically. There are a few crazy bits where I worked myself into a corner, and like all my quilting it's not perfect (or even that good in places), but I'm happy that I did it myself. And like I used to say when I taught some sewing classes: your first one is going to be all right, but your second go is going to be so much better. Here's to second tries!

I made the crib sized version of this quilt using three colours of crossweave cotton from Moda. Crossweaves are yarn dyed cottons similar to shot cottons but with a heavier hand and a tighter weave. The white is Kona and it was backed with a tree print from Camelot Cottons (which is on the sale rack at the moment, I think!). It was quilted using a both coral and off white cotton thread from Gutermann. The pattern is, of course, from Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr's wonderful new book, Quilts Made Modern.
