Sweet summer staple
I cannot say enough good things about this Oliver + S pattern, the Roller Skate Dress. It has everything I love in a sewing pattern: simple design, cute yet sophisticated styling and finally, lots of versatility. Also, the smart construction and full lining give you a finished product with near professional results that is comfortable for your child to wear.
Anyone can make this dress. I have been recommending it to customers non stop. As with all O + S patterns, the instructions and diagrams are impeccable and with it’s simple design this dress comes together very quickly. Variations on the neckline let you play with fabric combinations. And for girls who may not want the restrictions of a dress, the tunic-length option is perfect with leggings or shorts.
This sample is made with one of my favorite fabrics; classic, summery seersucker. We have several options in the store now including all white. I like playing with little details like the choice of button for the back loop closure and a tiny bit of contrasting thread.
You can really dress this pattern up or down. I have made two and both are very different. This striped version is just right for all kinds of summer activities like picnicking, visiting the snow-cone stand—and oh yes, roller skating! Another version made with black swiss dot and lined with black voile was the perfect thing for our school’s annual Father-Daughter dance. (I think this pattern in the above mentioned white seersucker would make the sweetest flower girl dress.)
