Sewing School 2
If you have a child who likes to sew, I would highly recommend this book, Sewing School 2, by Andria Lisle and Amie Petronis Plumley. Many sewing books for children are written with an emphasis on hand sewing—a great place to begin—but if your kiddo is ready for machine sewing, it’s a bit harder to find books which feature projects suited to their age, skill-level and interests.
Sewing School 2 is very user friendly and offers 10 sewing lessons in a clear, visual presentation. In addition to lots of photos, all of the projects have step-by-step instructions which are written in a way that kids can easily understand.
My eight-year-old daughter chose to make the “Sleepy Bear” for herself and did so with minimal help from me. From cutting out the pattern pieces to embroidering the face and stuffing the bear, she did it all with confidence. The only thing I did was sew the bear closed at the bottom, which can be tricky for little fingers on the machine with all that stuffing.
What a joy to see such self-directed creativity.
