Fabric Drive for IRCO Sewing Students
For the past five or six months, I've been volunteering at the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) in East Portland. The last few months, I've been part of a sewing class held at Africa House. Monday and Friday afternoons, our students come together and spend a few hours learning a new skill and working with their hands. Do you remember the first sewing class you took? It was such a thrill to watch something come together, to understand how a shirt or a bag or a quilt is put together, to compare notes with other sewists. For me and the other volunteers, it's a joy to be able to share that feeling with the students at IRCO, especially because so many of them have waited years to have an opportunity to learn to sew.
The sewing classes are popular and have grown quickly, so through out the month of May, we're going to be collecting fabric and supplies for Africa House. Unlike past drives, we'll be collecting almost any sewing related item - fabric, notions, tools, patterns, whatever you have no need for anymore. If it's taking up room in your sewing space, our sewing students can put it to good use for you! See below for our particular wish list.
- Fabric of 1 yard or more of any type but especially knits and lightweight apparel fabrics
- Sewing machine needles, especially microtex and ballpoint needles
- Dressmaking shears, for lefties and righties
- Lightweight interfacing
- Tracing paper
If you'd like to contribute but don't have any stash fabric and supplies that you want to get rid of, Bolt is offering 25% off basic notions that will be donated to IRCO. You can just leave your purchase with us!
Towards the end of the summer or possibly sooner, we'll be looking for one or two more volunteers to help with the Monday afternoon class. If you're interested in volunteering or you'd like to donate something that's not on the wish list, shoot us an email at email@example.com.
Thank you in advance from the volunteers and students! We truly appreciate whatever you're able to share.
