Summer Reading - Wise Craft Quilts

Summer always makes me want to quilt. Maybe it's the feeling of play that comes along with making a quilt or the longer days make a big project seem more approachable. Or maybe I'm a masochist who wants to spend hours with a blanket draped across my lap during hot, hot days... Either way, summer and quilts just seem to go together.

This summer I've been very inspired by Blair Stocker's newish book, Wisecraft Quilts. Like many quilt books, it's beautiful with lots of pictures of quilts in stylish interiors. I'm a real sucker for quilt photos. But more than that, Wisecraft Quilts focuses on using upcycled fabrics - old jeans, baby clothes, dress shirts, vintage hankies, a wedding dress, tyvek racing numbers - lots of different materials, many of which might by imbued with memories that you want to protect. Blair gently encourages you to dive in and make the most of your treasured fabrics. I know that I've been sitting on some precious fabrics, like a collection of Liberty fat eighths and a big bag of vintage yo-yos a friend rescued from a (clean) dumpster that I'd really like use, and this book gives me the courage I need. If you don't have a stack of special fabrics, there's no reason you can't go trolling at your favorite thrift shop and start making a quilt out of someone else's discards.
