Machine Basics: Ashton Top

Level 0 : You’ve never touched a sewing machine before, or haven’t sewn in a long time.


Learn the very basics of sewing, then put your new skills into practice. In this two session class, Autumn will guide you through the basics of how to thread and operate a sewing machine. The next week, you’ll make your first garment!

The Ashton Top is a versatile and size-inclusive tank top that can be made in two lengths.

    • None!

    • How to thread and operate a sewing machine

    • Reading and using a garment sewing pattern

    • Finishing techniques for necklines, armholes, and hems

    • The Ashton Top Pattern by Helen’s Closet

    • Light to medium weight woven fabric

    The amount of fabric you need will depend on the size you choose and the width of fabric. Refer to the pattern instructions for details.
