Make a Simple and Stylish Duffle Bag!

  • Bolt Fabric Boutique 2904 Northeast Alberta Street Portland, OR, 97211 United States (map)

Two Sundays
March 1st and 8th
10:00am to 1:30pm
$170
Level 1

This class is for Confident Beginner sewists. You must have experience threading a machine and using it with maybe a couple of basic projects under your belt. We will walk through the construction of a simple, unlined duffle-bag. You will expand on basic sewing skills by learning to install a zipper, attach hardware, sew curved edges to straight edges and finish raw seams with binding—fun challenges to increase your skills. Your finished duffle bag will be just what you need to carry your belongings for an overnight or weekend away. It is also perfect for the gym, yoga class, or a day at the spa.

Have fun with color as you choose your webbing, hardware and zipper!

Taught by Heather Anderson

Please see materials list below. A materials discount of 15% will be offered in the store.

This class is suitable for Level 1 and above. You must know how to use a sewing machine and follow a cutting layout as you will be asked to bring your pieces already cut to the first class. Ages 18 and up.

Our classroom is on the second floor and is currently only accessible by stairs. We are working on a solution to make our space accessible to everyone. Thanks for your understanding and patience while we work this out. You may e-mail us at classes@boltfabricboutique.com if you have any questions about this process.

This class requires a minimum of 3 participants. The class may be subject to cancellation if the minimum enrollment is not achieved.

    • how to thread and use a sewing machine

    • basic sewing vocabulary

    • sewing a straight line and maintaining a seam allowance

    • hemming

    • handling heavy weight fabric such as canvas

    • Zipper installation

    • Sewing curved to straight edges

    • Bias bound seams

    • 1 yard of non-directional, mid-weight canvas, herringbone twill or ripstop*. Choose fabric that’s approximately 8.5–10 oz. per square yard. Much lighter will be too flimsy. Too heavy will be hard to work with. Ask for guidance on fabric weights when you are shopping. *Cotton ripstop is a bit lighter in weight but very strong so that would also be acceptable.

    • 1 18-inch nylon-coil bag zipper. No metal teeth, please. Bolt carries a good selection of bag zippers in beautiful colors. If you like a zipper that is longer than 18 inches, that will work too.

    • 4.5 yards of 1.5-inch webbing

    • 2 yards of 20mm or 27mm bias binding to match or contrast with your main fabric.

    • 2x 1-inch D-ring in metal finish of your choice

    • 2x 1.5-inch swivel clips

    • 1x 1.5-inch tri-glide

    • Heavy-Duty snaps in finish or color of your choice. Optional for snap closure on outer pocket.

    • Polyester thread (Sew-All) to match both your bag fabric AND your webbing
