2:00pm to 5:00pm
Level 1 : Confident Beginner
Learn how to do Blackwork, an embroidery created with straight stitches in a thread color that contrasts with the background fabric. Students will stitch ten established patterns using the running stitch and backstitch, then see how to go from simple to complex shading within a single pattern.
Blackwork is traditionally done with black thread on white fabric to create geometric designs. It likely originated in North Africa, then was introduced to Spain. Catherine of Aragon, a Spanish native, brought blackwork to Britain in the Tudor period. Blackwork was stitched on clothing, particularly cuffs and collars. Today stitchers may use all thread colors and create contemporary art, such as landscapes and portraits.
