Level 1: You can thread and operate a sewing machine.
Take your first steps in bag making in this two-session workshop featuring the Merchant & Mills Jack Tar bag. Students will make a roomy bucket bag while learning the basics.
Taught by Christiane Winter, accomplished sewist of many bag samples for Bolt and other shops around town!

Various bag construction skills, including attaching straps, assembling D-rings, and sewing pockets
Techniques for sewing with sturdy fabrics and webbing

The Merchant & Mills Jack Tar Bag Pattern
Choose from the printed version or the .pdf version and get your .pdf printed at Bolt— students will receive a code for 2 pages of free printing.
1 yard main fabric:
Oilskin, mid to heavy weight cotton canvas or drill, and mid weight denim would all work well.
1 yard lining fabric:
Quilting cotton works well.
Coordinating thread
1 yard 1” or 1 ½“ webbing
Two 1” or 1 ½” D-rings to match webbing width
One magnetic clasp
Please note: Bolt sells a hardware kit for the Jack Tar bag, but this class will be using webbing for the straps rather than leather. The kit will not be necessary.
