Sew a Set of Mother-In-Law Pillow Cases

Level 1: You can thread and operate a sewing machine

In this class you will create custom pillowcases to enliven your bedroom. The housewife pillowcase originated in the 19th century and is designed for everyday bedding. These pillowcases measure the exact size of your pillow 20"x26" (standard) 20"x30" (queen) or 20"x36" (king). They fit snugly around the pillow with an internal pocket to secure the pillow in place.  One length of fabric makes up the body of two pillowcases. 

  • You can thread and operate a sewing machine

    • Even seam allowances

    • Flat piping

    • French seams

  • For 2 pillowcases:

    • 1 ¾ yd (standard) 2 yd (queen) 2 ½ yd (king) main fabric

    • ½ yard complimentary fabric for contrast cuff

    • coordinating thread

    Optional: 1 ½ yards bias or 1 ½ yards of 1 ½ “ wide strip for contrast stripe (a fat quarter works well for this)

    Important! Be sure to wash and press your fabric before class!
