September Mending: Woven Darning

  • Bolt Studio 4928 B Northeast 29th Avenue Portland, OR, 97211 United States (map)

Sunday, September 13th
10:00am to 1:00pm
Level 0

Got a pile of clothes in need of mending but not sure where to start? Mending is one of the best ways to make your wardrobe more sustainable and make your favorite clothes last longer.

In this class, you’ll learn how to do a classic woven darn. Practice swatches will be provided, and students are encouraged to experiment before darning their own items. Please note that this class teaches a (more or less) visible darn. A variety of yarn options will be provided, but if you have a specific yarn you would like to use please bring it!

You don’t need to have a darning loom!
However, if you have one, you can learn to use it in this class.

Taught by Daniela Steiner.

  • None!

    • Mending a hole with a woven darn

    • Use of a darning loom

    • Items to darn

    • Socks can be a good starting point because they are small and easy to manage, but any item in need of mending will work!

Please wash the items you plan to darn.

    • Coordinating embroidery thread or yarn

    • Darning loom if you have one you want to learn how to use, but it is not necessary for the class

    • Darning needles (Daniela likes John James needles)

    • Darning mushroom or something round (like an orange!) if working on a sock
