Improv Quilting: Flower-ish

Level 1: You can thread and operate a sewing machine.


Play with improvisational appliqué techniques and make pictures with fabric! Students will start with a background fabric and learn handwork and machine appliqué techniques to make art quilt tops inspired by flowers. The class will work on a small wall hanging quilt (16”x16”). If there is time, they will assemble the quilt sandwich and start hand quilting with sashiko-type stitches.

Taught by Robin O’Neil.

    • How to thread and operate a sewing machine

    • How to sew a (mostly) straight line and maintain a ¼ inch seam allowance

    • How to sew floral motifs using improv quilting techniques

    • Background fabric (16”x16” or larger)

    • Backing fabric and batting for quilt sandwich (at least 18” x 18”)

    • Fabric scraps for flower bits

    • Needle and thimble for handwork

    • Sashiko, embroidery, or quilting thread for handwork

    • Lunch

Ages 18 and up.
